It’s great to have a pool on those balmy summer days. It’s not so great to have a pool when you aren’t around to take care of it. If you have a busy lifestyle or simply don’t spend all of your time at your Palm Beach residence, you will need to seek out home care professionals to tend to your ongoing pool maintenance. One area of concern when it comes to owning a swimming pool is how often the pool filter should be maintained. There are 2 main types of pool filters that we have worked with including sand filters and cartridge filters.
First and foremost, the dangers of a dirty pool filter must be realized. A dirty pool filter can dramatically affect the circulation of your pool’s water. As water passes through the pool filter it can become clogged which will reduce pump efficiency which can result in green, cloudy water regardless of your chemical balance or how much you run the pump during the day. For this reason, the filter of the pool must be kept clean and in good condition as it is an integral component in the pool cleaning and maintenance system.
Below are a few tips for caring for and maintaining both of these types of filters:
- Sand filters – these filters are generally run for 1 hour per every 10 degrees of outside temperature per day. It is advised that you backwash the system at least every 2 to 4 weeks. Avoid over backwashing as this can cause an imbalance in chemicals and result in algae growth. Make sure that you don’t have your sand filter cleaned within 12 hours of having the pool chemically treated. The sand in your filter must be replaced every 4 or 5 years to ensure efficiency. If you have a painted pool, you may need to replace the filter sand at least once a year. Make sure that you check the filter components for cracks and damage every time you change the sand.
- Cartridge filters – these filters are generally run for 1 hour per every 10 degrees of outside temperature per day. Filter pressure and trapped dirt is a great indication of when the filter needs to be cleaned but this is usually required every 2 to 6 weeks. It is advised that you clean the filter the day before you chemically treat your pool water. Unfortunately the cartridge type filters aren’t designed for backwashing which means that they must be manually removed and sprayed clean during maintenance. It is best to check all parts for wear, tear and damage during this process. You can expect to need to replace the cartridge elements at least every 2 years.
