These home maintenance tips could save you a lot of money – and possibly even your life. Do you always find yourself making last-minute repairs or dealing with household emergencies that could easily have been avoided? It’s easy to steer clear of that stress and expense if you just stay on top of your home maintenance. These tips will help you keep your house in good shape throughout the year.
Guard your woodwork against termites
Termites can wreak havoc with your home if an infestation goes unchecked. On a regular basis, check all your woodwork, especially in dark, out-of-the-way places. Look for gaps, weaknesses, flaking or rotting. Call an exterminator if necessary.
Maintain your smoke and CO detectors
These devices are great to have. The problem is that we tend to install them and then forget about them, meaning that they may not work when we need them. Check the batteries and test the detectors every few months.
Check your fire extinguishers
If you don’t have fire extinguishers, make a point of getting one soon. Always make sure that they are accessible, that the safety seals are intact, that there is no damage and that they are checked by a professional once a year.
Bleed your radiators
Bleeding a radiator gets all the air out and means the radiator uses less power to warm up. This keeps your heating system working efficiently and reduces your energy costs.
Clean and repair your gutters
Clogged gutters can overflow and break, causing strain on the roof and possibly leading to damage elsewhere on the building too. It’s a dirty job but it has to get done!
Check and change your HVAC filters
All kinds of pollutants collect in your air conditioners’ filters over time. If you check, clean and/or change your filters regularly, you will not only save on your energy bills, you will also ensure that the air in your home is fresher and safer.
Owning a home requires a big investment of time and money. It’s always far better to do continuous, small maintenance tasks than to wait until something goes wrong and have to do damage control. In next month’s blog, we will look at a seasonal maintenance to-do list to help you take care of your house as the weather shifts.
