Over the past few years, South Florida has been relatively lucky in terms of being able to come out of massive storms and hurricanes without crippling damage. The good fortune of the Sunshine State, however, shouldn’t lead you to avoid preparing your home for hurricane season each year.
Hurricane season started in June, so if you haven’t already implemented these safety and protective measures, now is the time to do so:
Window Shutters
One of the outdated home preparedness tips that used to be given to residents of South Florida is to board up their windows. While this is a step in the right direction, it does not offer enough in terms of protecting your home. A better way to go about protecting your window from the debris that can get flung at your home during a tropical storm is to invest in quality window shutters that have been designed for function as opposed to decoration.
Inspecting and Protecting Your Roof
Loose roof tiles and/or bubbling roof sheeting need to be fixed. Besides this type of regular maintenance, you also need to make sure that your roof is firmly strapped to the structure of your home. You can do this by installing additional roof clips and straps, which provide an extra element of protection.
Secure Outdoor Furniture, Vehicles And Other Items
Besides lawn chairs, deck tables, and kid’s toys, small motor vehicles such as jet skis, paddle boats, bicycles, and motorcycles need to be moved to higher ground if they can’t be placed inside a garage. These items can be severely damaged by a hurricane and it can also cause damage to your home if they are blown into your home.
