How to Shop for White Sale Curtains

Replace your window treatments and your room can quickly undergo a stunning transformation. You had thought about painting the walls, replacing the carpeting and even undertaking a major renovation, but have learned the best budget-saving secret of interior design — new curtains can offer a dramatic makeover. Shopping for curtains means taking measurements as well as considering the look that is right for your home.

Measurements

First things first: you will need a tape measure to obtain a precise measurement for your curtains. Either a metal or a paper tape measure will do, but with the latter you will need the help of someone to hold it in place.

Second, measure the window frame from top to bottom and from side to side. Round up by up to 0.125 inches and determine whether your curtains will be mounted on the inside of the window frame or on its outside.

Styles

What type of window treatments are you interested in? There are curtains and there are drapes. There are also window scarves and valances. Window curtains come in tab top, ring top, rod pocket and grommet top, offering different ways to display your curtains.

Choose sheer curtains if you want to maximize the amount of light that can get into a room without compromising your privacy. Thermal curtains do an excellent job of retaining heat and effectively give a “blackout” look for people that need increased privacy or want to need a darker environment for sleep.

Fabric

There are five fabric types to consider when buying your curtains. Silk, linen, cotton, wool and a synthetic blend are your options, with cotton being the most versatile of all. Linen looks great in a summer kitchen, silk offers an elegance befitting a dining room or other formal room and wool suggests strength and character.

If your budget is limited, consider various synthetic blends. The cheapest synthetic curtains will have a plastic look, however there are certain blends containing polyester and nylon that are quite well made. Blends are also durable and not subject to shrinkage.

Accessories

Your curtain shopping is almost done, but there are a few accessories or adds ons that you might need to consider. Liners can look great behind heavy drapes and offer more privacy especially in bedrooms. Liners can also protect your investment as the sun can fade your drapes fast.

Other accessories to consider are curtain rods, tie backs or hold backs, finials, tassels and trim. You may find that such touches enhance the look of your curtain and drapes in certain rooms including your formal dining room or a sitting area.

Final Analysis

Once you determine the types of curtains or drapes that you want, get ready to comparison shop. January is a big white sales month, therefore you may find that the best deals for window treatments kick in right after Christmas and extend well into the first month of the year.
