Top Kitchen Design Trends You Must Know Before Remodeling

Thinking about remodeling your kitchen? Read below to find out what trends are in and out

Description: Remodeling your kitchen is an exciting prospect. There are so many great ideas out there, so take a look at the kitchen design trends for inspiration.

The Kitchen is no longer just a place for cooking. Its function has been extended to dining, entertaining, parties and coffee mornings. It has become a multi-functional space which is the social hub of most homes. The kitchen is the heart of the home and as result; it is often one of the first rooms to be decorated.

Before any remodeling project, it is wise to do some research first and find out what’s hot at the moment. Hopefully my kitchen design trends for 2013-2014 will inspire you today.

Colors are Back in Trend

We’ve all embraced minimalism, but while many great designers are keeping the kitchen neutral, colors are definitely coming back! Contrasting colors are becoming increasingly popular, not only in the living room and bedroom, but also in the kitchen.

Multi-colored cupboards or ’statement’ color walls can liven the whole kitchen up. More importantly, it is easy to do and if you have a traditional kitchen, colors can instantly give it a contemporary touch. Also, try painting your island in colors like teal, blue, mustard or walnut. You will get a fresh feel instantly and with little effort.

The Kitchen Is No Longer Just The Women’s Domain

Nowadays, the kitchen is a place for the whole family. It has become a multi-purpose room for more than just cooking. Plus with the increasing popularity of all the reality TV cooking shows, more and more people are taking to kitchen to test their culinary skills.

As a result of the kitchen’s changing identity, more people are pursuing a more masculine feel, as opposed to the traditional feminine country kitchen look. If that’s what you are looking for, a unique styled brass range hood could be a good choice. Think dark or bold colors, gadgets, spotlights and chrome.

Raw, Natural Materials Are Back in Fashion

Nature is coming into the kitchen. Raw materials and natural styles are back in fashion. Whether it’s a raw wood table, weathered-looking chairs or rusted metals, they all add a unique, rustic and ‘organic’ look.

The Kitchen As a Social Space

The Kitchen is now a very important space for entertaining, but also as a social hub for most families. When designing your kitchen, you should not only think about how the space would work for cooking, but also for parties and socializing. Try adding an island into your kitchen, as this layout encourages a social atmosphere – perfect for having friends round or chatting with your family while you cook.

Try picking a circular island as this will create a more fluid shape in your kitchen. And don’t forget to fully utilize the whole unit, by using it as a storage facility as well! Islands not only redefine your kitchen space, but can help you keep your kitchen tidy and organized.

If, however, you don’t have enough space in the kitchen for an island like this, a small but stylish moveable table and some built in ‘Banquette’ seating would be good alternatives. The latter can create a relaxed social area in the kitchen and fit into a relatively small kitchen easily, while the table offers more flexibility, as well as a cosy dining space.

“A banquette can bridge the gap between a kitchen chair and a sofa for casual entertaining”, said interior designer Robin Siegerman from Renovation Boot camp in the interview on the latest kitchen design trends. This new trend looks great and creates a practical living space, which reflects the needs of the modern kitchen.

Adding a Bit of Fun

Using Letters and words in kitchen décor is a new hot trend in 2013-2014. You’ll find letters decorating ceilings, murals, crockery and even kitchen walls. Decorative kitchen wall murals are a great way to add some color and character to your kitchen. Their dramatic size can really define your space and become the perfect centerpiece of your design.

I love this ‘wordy’ new trend as there is a lot of scope to personalize this look. More importantly, kitchens are becoming an expression of our personalities and as a result, they are becoming more fun. You can see this in the bold colors and quirky décor choices around at the moment.

If you don’t have the time or budget to do all the above, choose just one or two elements of your kitchen to change. You’ll find that just by making small changes, your kitchen can look refreshed. You could start by replacing the doors, surfaces, worktops, lights or even just add some quirky ‘word art’ on the walls. A splash of color can create a modern kitchen in no time at all, even if you don’t replace any of the units!
